BCLA-webinar: Oculomics: Het oog als venster op de gezondheid
Oculomics: The Eye as a Window to Health explores how the anterior eye can serve as an accessible route into whole-body health assessment, a rapidly emerging field known as oculomics. In the first half of the session, Dr Emily Patterson (Senior Vision Scientist, Occuity) introduces oculomics research, tracing its origins and explaining how structures at the front of the eye, including the tear film, cornea, aqueous humour and lens, can provide biologically meaningful, non-invasive signals linked to conditions such as diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and Wilson's disease, alongside more familiar posterior-eye biomarkers. She highlights both established clinical associations and practical takeaways already relevant to practitioners today.
Dr Alistair Bounds then examines how this biological potential can be translated into everyday clinical measurement, showcasing Occuity's handheld optical instrument platform. He covers the PM1 pachymeter, already used for precise, non-contact corneal thickness measurement relevant to intraocular pressure and glaucoma assessment, before introducing SD1, Occuity's device in development for lens-based diabetes and pre-diabetes screening. AX1, Occuity's axial length biometer, is also discussed in the context of myopia management.
Together, the session gives attendees a grounded understanding of anterior-eye oculomics, from underlying biology through to the instruments that may bring it into routine optometric and community practice.
